Yoga and Lymphatic System

Yoga and Breathwork support the immune system and help move lymph carrying waste through the body. While the heart pumps blood through the body, the lymphatic system, the body’s “sewer system” has no dedicated muscles to move the fluid through and out of the body. Gravity, movement, massage , and breath are the catalysts for draining the lymph and waste. The lymph system surrounds the major organs and absorbs the waste storing it in the lymph nodes. When a threat is detected in the nodes, they become inflamed and send for help. This is one of the ways the immune system protects the body from pathogens.

The largest of the lymphatic ducts is the thoracic duct. It runs parallel to the spine. This duct is massaged by the diaphragm during deep breathing as well as through movement of the spine during yoga practice.

A consistent pranayama and yoga practice helps keep the body free from illness and dis-ease causing pathogens.
